Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything was primarily filmed in Del Mar, California, with additional footage captured in Los Angeles, California and Bryan, Texas. The film follows disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes during the 34 days before she reported to federal prison in May 2023. Here is everything we know about You Can See Everything.
The documentary marks Fielder’s feature directorial debut alongside co-director Oppenheim, best known for his 2020 documentary Some Kind of Heaven. A24 distributed the film, which premiered as a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival on September 6, 2026, before hitting theaters nationwide on October 16, 2026. Amanda Seyfried, who played Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout, also appears in the film’s second half.

Where was You Can See Everything filmed?
You Can See Everything was filmed across three locations in California and Texas over the course of 2023. The vast majority of footage came from an oceanfront rental home in Del Mar, a small coastal city about 20 miles north of downtown San Diego.
Holmes and her partner Billy Evans — an heir to the Evans Hotels family, which owns San Diego properties including the Bahia Resort Hotel and The Lodge at Torrey Pines — had settled in the Del Mar area with their two children, William and Invicta. It was here that they invited Fielder and Oppenheim to document their family life in the weeks before Holmes’ prison surrender.

The Sandy Lane rental home in Del Mar, California
The documentary’s most intimate footage was shot inside a rented house in Sandy Lane, an ultra-private gated community along the Del Mar coastline. The property sits in one of the most exclusive stretches of San Diego County’s coast, with direct ocean views and beach access.
What makes this location so unusual for a documentary is how Fielder and Oppenheim didn’t just visit — they moved in. Fielder slept in the guest bedroom of the Holmes-Evans household and lived alongside the family 24 hours a day. That constant proximity gave the film its claustrophobic, psychologically tense atmosphere.
“Near the end of filming, Billy [Evans] was trying to exert a level of control over the project that made us uncomfortable, and communication with him sort of broke down because of that.”
Nathan Fielder on the deterioration of his relationship with Evans during filming
The arrangement started to fracture as filming progressed. Evans reportedly tried to control the project’s direction, and tensions between him and the filmmakers escalated until communication collapsed entirely. A24 had given Fielder and Oppenheim what’s been described as a “kill switch” — full creative control over the final cut, regardless of the subjects’ wishes.
How did Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim start working together?
Their partnership began over email. Oppenheim learned that Fielder had watched part of his 2020 documentary Some Kind of Heaven and reached out. The two hit it off, became friends, and started exploring projects they could co-direct.
Fielder had already read John Carreyrou’s 2018 book Bad Blood and initially thought the Holmes story had been covered to death. But something shifted when Holmes retreated from public view after her sentencing. According to Vanity Fair, Holmes was “utterly certain that everyone else will believe her too, if only she has an opportunity to speak her truth.” That conviction drew Fielder back into the story.
Where do the Amanda Seyfried reenactment scenes take place?
The Seyfried sequences were filmed separately in the Los Angeles area. After Holmes went to prison and the filmmakers lost direct access, Fielder’s friend Emma Stone introduced him to Seyfried, who had portrayed Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout and earned widespread praise for the role.
Seyfried was eager to revisit the character. Fielder and Oppenheim expanded the documentary’s scope by having her reenact private conversations that the filmmakers had with Holmes and Evans during filming. These staged scenes blur the line between documentary and dramatization, and they’ve become one of the film’s most talked-about elements.
Did they film You Can See Everything on location or in a studio?
Almost all of the documentary was filmed on location. The Del Mar sequences were shot in the actual home where Holmes lived, not on a set or soundstage. Only the Amanda Seyfried reenactment portions were filmed in a more controlled production environment in Los Angeles.
The Bryan, Texas footage is contextual rather than extensive. The Federal Prison Camp in Bryan is a minimum-security women’s facility where Holmes reported on May 30, 2023, to begin serving her sentence of more than 11 years (later reduced) for defrauding Theranos investors.
What is the runtime of You Can See Everything?
You Can See Everything has a runtime of 174 minutes.
Can you visit any of the filming locations?
The Sandy Lane community in Del Mar is a private, gated neighborhood, so you can’t casually drive up to the house where filming took place. The surrounding Del Mar coastline, however, is public and accessible — the beaches where some of the documentary’s walking sequences were captured are open to visitors year-round.
Del Mar itself is a popular coastal destination north of San Diego, known for the Del Mar Racetrack and the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve just a few miles south. If you’re heading to the area, those are worth a stop even without the documentary connection.
