Where Was ‘Nomadland’ Filmed?

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland—which started streaming on Hulu, free to all subscribers, as we speak—is in some ways a tour of the American West, and it’s lovely. The story follows a lady named Fern (performed by Frances McDormand, who can also be a producer on the movie) who lives out of her van, touring and searching for work. She’s not the one one—she’s a part of a group of nomads, lots of whom are older Americans who misplaced their houses within the 2008 financial recession.

Adapted from the 2017 non-fiction e book Nomadland: Surviving America within the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, author/director Zhao shot Nomadland in 2018 with cinematographer Joshua James Richards and a small crew. Here’s what we learn about the place Nomadland was filmed.

Other places embrace Point Arena in Mendocino County on the Northern California coast, for the scenes with Dave (David Strathairn) and his household; Yuma, Arizona; San Bernadino County, California; and Quarsize, Arizona, the place Zhao filmed the real-life gathering of RV-dwellers generally known as the  “Rubber Tramp Rendezvous,” hosted by famed vandweller Bob Wells. Wells was featured within the movie, as have been different real-life nomads, together with Linda May and Swankie.
