In an August radio interview, Swift herself said that the tune is about how “Everyone makes errors, everyone actually messes up typically. This is a tune that I wrote from the attitude of a 17-year-old boy,” and added that she named two of the characters in her story after her buddies’ kids: Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ son and daughter, James and Inez.
