Vanessa Bell Calloway landed the role of Imani Izzi in “Coming to America” with the assistance of a $30 wig.
“My hair was quick on the time, and I do know males in Hollywood: They like lengthy hair, so my quick hair was not going to be fairly to them. So I ran to the sweetness provide retailer and I bought this little low-cost wig,” she advised Page Six Style of getting ready for her audition for the 1988 flick.
Ironically, the wig Calloway selected was known as the “Imani,” which she took as a “signal from God.”
“Everybody liked the hair, however no one stated something about my performing; they only stated, ‘I like your hair,’” the “Saints & Sinners: Judgment Day” actress, 63, continued.
“When I went to the callback with Eddie Murphy, everybody went on and on about my hair. Now I’m cracking up inside, as a result of I went out and acquired a $30 wig.”
But the role of Imani Izzi, Eddie Murphy’s character’s organized bride, known as for a much more dramatic ‘do.
“I ended up carrying two weaves,” Calloway recalled of her character’s excessive ponytail. “There was a lot hair, I had to find out how to steadiness my neck and stuff. You couldn’t even see my actual hair in any respect.”
Equally uncomfortable — although attractive — was Imani’s iconic gold robe.
“The gown was stunning. I had a number of fittings for that gown” she stated, revealing she stood nonetheless for an hour so the staff may appliqué the costume whereas it was on her physique.
“The gown was so tight, you would not sit down in it, so that you leaned on a board to relaxation,” she added. “I couldn’t get round in that gown. You couldn’t do quite a lot of shifting in it, so I simply sort of leaned in it.”
