Wolcott would later grow to be one of the founding directors of the Challenger Center. She later remarried and moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia. She married Hugh Dixon “Dix” Wolcott, a health care provider and a household pal, The Washington Post reported. Dix Wolcott went to highschool with Smith on the Naval Academy. While Smith went on to be an astronaut, Dix Wolcott turned an obstetrician-gynecologist. She stated her husband appreciated her want to rescue stray animals of all types and supported her.
In 1986, she wrote a letter rebuking NASA for its response to the accident, Chicago Tribune reported. She stated the Rogers Commission Report mirrored “extremely horrible judgments, shockingly sparse concern for human life, situations of officers missing the braveness to train the duties of their excessive workplace and a few very bewildering thought processes.”
Wolcott stated that she first met Smith in 1961 when she was 15, The Washington Post reported. He requested her to marry him six years later after he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. She stated the morning he died, they’d spoken by telephone and he instructed her it was too chilly and “there’s no approach we are able to go at the moment.” She stated he had written “I like you” notes to her and her kids earlier than he received on the shuttle that day.

In 2018, Wolcott was honored by the Virginia Beach Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for her love of rescuing animals, The Virginian-Pilot reported. She stated that when she moved to Virginia Beach in 1991, she introduced a rabbit, horses, and a number of cats and canine together with her. In 2016, Balch attended a memorial for fallen astronauts on the thirtieth anniversary of the Challenger catastrophe, SpaceFlightNow reported.
