Ecuador: Violence kills dozens of inmates at three prisons

Ecuadorian police on Tuesday mentioned greater than 50 individuals had been killed in jail mutinies in three separate amenities.

News of the violence comes as Ecuador struggles to cope with jail overcrowding and frequent violence between gangs.

What do we all know?

The unrest occurred at amenities within the port metropolis of Guayaquil within the southwest, and at Cuenca and Latacunga within the Andes.

Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno wrote on Twitter that felony organizations have been behind the violence.

“The police and Interior Ministry are working to regain management of the prisons,” Moreno wrote.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Patricio Pazmino tweeted {that a} centralized command publish was now investigating “concerted motion by felony organizations to generate violence in penitentiary facilities.”

Police who introduced the scenario beneath management in Guayaquil seized firearms, machetes, knives, and cellphones from prisoners’ cells, in response to the prosecutor’s workplace.

Recent rise in jail riots

Riots sparked by gang rivalry in Ecuadorean jails left 11 prisoners deceased in December. A 90-day state of emergency that Moreno ordered within the jails to carry “mafia” teams beneath management was lifted in November.

Inmate violence left 51 individuals deceased in 2020, in response to police figures.

To cut back prisoner numbers amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Ecuadorean authorities commuted sentences for minor offenses to non-custodial penalties.
